Here, you can admire rare species such as Californian long-eared owls and lowland gorillas. Tickets can be purchased on-site at the ticket office, but online purchases are also convenient on the zoo's website. Due to the numerous attractions for children, such as the mini ropes course, the mini zoo, and the playground, we recommend visiting Opole with the whole family (and taking advantage of the family ticket). It's worth remembering that the zoo can be visited up to one hour after closing time (while you're already inside). It's one of the largest zoos in Poland in terms of area, so it's worth setting aside at least three hours for your visit.

A short history of the Opole Zoo

The origins of the Opole Zoo date back to the 1920s, when a section of the park on Bolko Island was designated for roe deer, pheasants, and peacocks, the sight of which made walks more enjoyable for Opole residents. In the 1930s, the site was purchased by the city and subsequently transformed into a 1.5-hectare menagerie. At that time, the Opole Zoo housed lions, antelopes, and African monkeys, among others. During World War II, the animals were taken to Germany, and the facility itself suffered significant damage. The zoo reopened in 1953 and systematically added new species. In 1980, the Opole Zoo underwent a significant expansion. In 1997, further tragic events occurred – a great flood completely destroyed the zoo. A year later, its long-term reconstruction began. Today, it is a modern facility, featuring, among other things, a zoo. a giraffe house, a gorilla enclosure or a pool with California sea lions.

Over 330 species of animals!

As of 2019, the Opole Zoo boasts nearly 4,000 animals representing over 330 species! Visitors are particularly impressed by the giraffe house, which boasts a sizable herd of giraffes. The Opole Zoo is the only place in Poland where you can admire Californian sea lions – the enclosure of these marine mammals is one of its biggest attractions! The Opole Zoo is also one of only two zoos in Poland where you can see lowland gorillas (they have their own enclosure here). Other interesting species you can admire here include zebras, savannah servals, pumas, American jaguars, ring-tailed lemurs, Andean llamas, kangaroos, camels, pygmy hippos, and rhinos. The Opole Zoo also boasts a rich animal population of many species of birds (including the Emu), reptiles (including the panther chameleon), amphibians and invertebrates.

Not just entertainment, but also a mission!

The Opole Zoo serves not only as a major tourist attraction in the Opole region. Its activities also contribute to the mission of protecting endangered wildlife. The Opole Zoo belongs to international and national associations, actively participating in breeding programs. This allows many endangered animal species not only to survive in a zoo setting but even return to their natural habitats!

Opole Zoo Map

Opole Zoo - children welcome!

A visit to the zoo is a great way to spend some enjoyable and productive free time with the whole family. It's especially fun for children, who can see animals they've previously only seen in educational books. The Opole Zoo itself is also perfectly prepared for children. Special educational boards with interesting information about individual species line the trails. The Mini Zoo is also a fantastic attraction, where children, under the supervision of their parents, can interact directly with the animals, for example, by petting or feeding them. Children aged three and older can also enjoy the Zoolandia mini-rope park (admission to the rope park is an additional fee). The Opole Zoo also features a traditional playground, where children can let off steam while parents relax after a long walk.

If you like to spend your day actively and don't like to waste time, we have some interesting information for you - just 23 minutes by car from the Opole Zoo there is another important attraction of the Opole region - Opole Village MuseumVisiting both of the region's attractions in one day is a great way to spend quality time with your family.

Travel time from the Zamkowy Młyn Hotel: 24 minutes
Approximate visiting time: about 180 minutes
Paid admission: Yes
Attraction for families with children: Yes

Book your stay at Hotel Zamkowy Młyn *** - only 24 minutes from the Opole Zoo:

Book a Room Today

["post-3068","attraction","type-attraction","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
