Lipno Arboretum, what is it really?

What is an arboretum? This word isn't often used in common parlance, and its unfamiliarity is entirely understandable. Let us explain: an arboretum is a dendrological garden, or dendrarium, a place where trees and shrubs are studied, cultivated, and collected. It is a special type of botanical garden. The dendrological garden in Lipno is one of the most interesting tourist attractions in the Opole region and a popular destination for a Sunday family stroll.

The oldest arboretum in Poland is located in Lipno!

When it comes to the dendrological garden, Lipno boasts the oldest site of its kind in the country! In medieval times, the Przesieka Śląska forest, which marked the border between Lower and Upper Silesia (as it was then known), was located in this area. In 1872, Count Praschma, owner of the Niemodlin estate, ordered the establishment of an English landscape park there. The period after World War II was not particularly kind to the Lipno gardens, but over the years, the site has begun to regain its former glory. Today, the Lipno Arboretum is part of the "Lipno" nature and landscape complex, covering an area of 4.18 hectares. It is the pride of the region and one of the most interesting tourist attractions in the Opole region.

What types of trees and shrubs can be admired here?

Lipno is the warmest place in the Opole region (the average annual temperature is as high as 8.6°C), which for decades has favored the growth of numerous species of exotic trees and shrubs from such corners of the world as Southern Europe, North America, Japan, and China. The forested surroundings of the Nature and Landscape Complex provided natural protection from frost and wind for plants from other climate zones. Currently, the garden boasts approximately 100 species of trees and shrubs, such as azaleas, rhododendrons, rhododendrons, and sweetgums. Among the most important specimens are trees, probably planted in the 18th century, such as the giant arborvitae, ginkgo biloba, American tulip tree, and Virginia juniper.
